Then something that I read on Joe Rasmussen's site many many years ago came floating to the top of my mind - I recall he was talking about Sony SACD players, and that he was able to play SACD simply by finding the DSD signal on the Sony's circuit board and filtering it (3rd order at 90kHz IIRC) before a j-fet buffer sent the signal to his pre-amp. No DAC at all!! ©
