APC S15 AC-filter for standard amps, Cascade APS90 Power Supply through a DieHard Platinum buffer battery for Zapco Z-150.2
The variables ..
Zapco Z-150.2
McIntosh MC252
Bryston 4BSST2
First and foremost: The Z-150 has BALLS ! Plenty of power and without cracking a sweat. For the price point this is Super hard to beat amp, especially when size comes into play. Compact, affordable and plenty of juice on tap.
The sound: Steady and quite pleasant. For a raw, semi-industrial look, I admit, a bit lower expectations were already bouncing around in my mind. After the first intro, that thought was a distant memory. As the output was opened up, there was Zero sign of strain or fatigue. A+ ! Never a loss in any area either which was quite refreshing as many contenders would run out of juice and the Z-150 just openly invited you to go further.
In comparison to the MC252 .. Ok, I have to be honest here, the McIntosh did portray a smoother, more 'lush' playback. That Is also the primary characteristic of the McIntosh though - warm, but subtle. The Z-150 had no problem being in the same contest though and leaped ahead where the MC252 ran out of juice. While the McIntosh may have been more polite and kind where are comparing a $5k, 110Lb home amplifier to the nearly 1/10th of the cost, compact mobile amplifier ! All things are Not equal !
In comparison to the Bryston .. Well, Brystons have Always had an advantage of a heavy bottom end. Robust, well defined and certainly let's you knows it's presence. However the Z-150 was not outclassed here ! Was it on par ? On the bottom end - not quite, but not terrible far off from it's nearly $4,500 difference competitor. On the top end the Z-150 seemed to have prevailed by a slight margin. Let me note, neither was 'bad' by Any means whatsoever, but the Z-150 maintain a bit more of stability over the Bryston here when cracked open. Power and available output was in Brystons favor, but at about triple the power sitting in reserve !
No SPL tests were done here as I am not accustomed to 'beating' on my monitors, nor is this an SPL contest !
